I spent a lot of time doing DIY projects for the reception, but my ceremony in France was starting to look seriously neglected of any personal touches. Sure, there were the lavender fields and all that natural beauty of Provence, but what about the dinner we were going to make back at the house? The table setting shouldn’t be forgotten! So I added these two decorative items that were easy to make, easy to pack, easy to travel with, and easy to throw out when we returned home.
Part One: Tissue Pom Poms
Martha Stewart has an excellent tutorial for making tissue pom-poms, which is where I learned to make mine. I left them in the folded stage before we left for France and then fluffed them up into the pom poms you see here when we got there. Luckily, the outdoor dining table at the rental house was covered by a fabric gazebo with a sturdy metal frame from which we could hang the pom poms. They created a very nice focal point over the dinner setting.
Total Time: About 15-20 minutes each pom pom to fold and fluff.
Total Cost: This is one of those things that shopping at the $1 Store pays off, even though tissue is relatively inexpensive to begin with. Three colors came to $7.18, after taxes. The gray tissue was purchased at Target because the $1 Store didn’t have that color, so I had to pay a bit more for it. This made five large pom poms and seven small ones.
Part Two: Paper Fans
Provence in the summer gets stifling hot. I wanted to create something for each member of the wedding party that would help them to alleviate this heat. Naturally, fans were the first thing that came to mind. They also looked very nice on the dinner plates for an added decorative touch.
These fans from Bhldn were the inspiration for my paper fans.
Using the same method of folding and trimming as the tissue pom poms, mine were made with decorative paper I found at an art supply store and Popsicle sticks. The sticks were wrapped with twine when unfolded. It was a really easy project that Mr. M was able to manage on his own. He even folded the tissue pom poms. How’s that for delegating?

Total Time: Each fan took about 7-10 minutes each.
Total Cost: I only paid for the paper, which came to a total of $5.53, including taxes. Luckily, this paper was on sale so I was able to buy two 24×30 sheets for this price. The Popsicle sticks were left over from the program fans we made for the reception.
