Project Wedding: DIY Hair Fascinator

Photography credit: Inge Kathleen Photography

This hair fascinator could have ruined my wedding. I could not, for the life of me, figure out how it would ultimately look. Without knowing the design, I could not make it and time was running out. Finally, I found inspiration at Claire’s, of all places. It was a simple design, yet had the right flair that I wanted to balance out my simple dress. The downside was that the fascinator wasn’t available in white. Luckily, I had the feathers already purchased waiting for me at home.

To make this fascinator, you’ll need:

1 - Alligator clip
Scrap of felt
1 - Filigree button or decorative stone
Hot glue gun and glue sticks

Two types of feathers:
(Since I don’t know the names of these feather types, these descriptions will have to do.)
Feather A is the short fat feather used for the “base”
Feather B is the long, wispy feather with a long stem used as an “accent”

This fascinator is so simple and quick to make, you won’t believe it.

  1. Hot glue the alligator clip to the felt, cut in a circle. In hindsight, I should’ve probably used black felt because my hair is dark, but I only had white felt in my supply.
  2. Lay out Feather A in a ring around the felt, covering it entirely. Hot glue ends of the feathers to the felt, making sure they all touch in the center.
  3. Place six Feather Bs over Feather A, in a six-point asterisk layout. Hot glue to secure.
  4. Hot glue the filigree button or decorative stone at the center of the felt, covering the ends of the feathers. The finished diameter is about 4-5 inches.
  5. Clip the fascinator on your hair and admire how stunning you look!

**Funny tidbit: The decorative button in the center actually fell off when I was in France, just as I was getting ready to clip it in my hair! Good thing I brought my hot glue gun with me and was able to get that sucker secured back on there. So, my tip to you DIY brides with a destination wedding: bring your hot glue gun with you. You may never know when it could be a lifesaver!

Total time: 15 minutes!!!

Total cost: $9.91, but I have lots of feathers and alligator clips left over.
