My friend’s son, Langdon, really looooooves the pom poms & color matching activity that I made for his set of busy bags. He hasn’t quite learned how to do the activity the way I intended for it to be done, but he sure loves lining up those pom poms on his fire truck. He also loves scooping them up with the plastic container and dumping them back out again. Silly kid!
My friend asked me where I got the pom poms. My answer: The dollar store. In fact, what I didn’t have in my stash of leftover crafting materials, I picked up at the dollar store. Cheap and cheerful, my friend! Cheep. and. cheerful.
POM POMS & COLOR MATCHING
Ages: 1+
Skill: Motor skills; color recognition
Supply List
• Colorful pom poms, size small
• Plastic container with a tight soft plastic lid, preferably one with a clear or white lid, but this was all I could find at the dollar store!
• Permanent markers in colors to match the pom poms (I used Sharpies)
• Hole puncher or X-acto knife
• Round reinforcement labels from the office supply store (optional if you have a dark colored lid)
Step-by-Step
1. Punch several holes around the lid of the container. I punched 8 holes in mine, but the amount for you will vary depending on how big your lid is. If your hole puncher can’t reach the center of the lid, then get out the X-acto knife or utility blade to make x-incisions in the plastic. Then around the incisions.
2. If you have a colored lid like I do, apply round reinforcement labels over the holes. These labels are meant to reinforce hole punched papers for 3-ring binders. Using these brought me back to the days of school, man! If you have a white or clear lid, you can skip this step and move on to #3…!
3. With a permanent marker, color a ring around the punched holes. It’s good if your markers match the colors of the pom poms.
4. Then throw in the pom poms and put the lid on!
How To Play
Dump the pom poms out of the container and put the lid back on. Have your child push the pom poms into the holes, trying to match the colors.
Another activity for them to develop their fine motor skills and color education! Next time, I will share an activity for the older kids. See you then!
I’ve linked up this project at these parties here.
