For the remainder of this month, I am going to detail a project I made for my friend’s son’s first birthday. It will be lengthy if written in one post, so I’m going to break down the project one activity at a time.
You may have remembered my super awesome model extraordinaire and her minion from The Floral Crown Tutorial a few weeks back. That little guy (Langdon) in that post was the recipient of a set of busy bags made by yours truly. Busy bags are activities for kids to keep themselves busy and entertained for a short time while mama (or papa) takes care of work around the house or whatever. Usually, the activities are educational, but done so in a fun way.
Langdon’s birthday was in April, but I wanted to see how he enjoyed the busy bags before I shared them with you. Several of the bags are more advanced and some are just right for a one-year old. For that reason, I’ll include the age range I think each bag would be suited for. Perhaps over time, I may add more bags, so you can have a good variety for your little ones.
The best part of making these bags is that I was able to use up a lot of my old craft supplies. You may have lots of scraps leftover over from previous projects - this would be a good time to use them!
Let’s get started with our first project!
THREADING FELT SQUARES
Ages: 1+
Skill: Motor skills; color recognition
Supply List
• Fabric scraps, cut into 2×2 squares - you’ll need a lot
• Needle
• Thread
• Ribbon - 12-20″ long
• 2-Large buttons
Step-by-Step
1. Sew the buttons onto both ends of the ribbon.
2. Cut out your fabric scraps into 2×2 squares. I used felt because I had a lot of it laying around, and also they’re easy to grab for little hands.
3. Cut a slit wide enough for your ribbon and button to slip through in the center of the fabric squares.
4. Thread the ribbon through the squares.
How To Play
Remove all the fabric squares from the ribbon and let your child thread the squares back on one by one.
Imagine all the colors they’ll get to know and the fine motor skills they’ll pick up with this activity! I’ve yet to hear back from my friend about how Langdon has taken to these squares. I think he’s been too preoccupied with his most favorite busy bag activity, which I will share with you in Monday’s post. For now, have fun putting this project together this weekend with your babe!
I’ve linked up this project at these parties here.
