If you missed my post on Thrift Store Tray #1, you can check it out here.
I was so lucky to find two trays in good shape at Goodwill that day. They were both blank canvases just waiting for a new look.
This tray was $3.99! Such a good deal.
It had great dentil details around the border.
Although the flaw in one corner desperately called for a paint over!
I saw this placemat at Superstore. It had just the right blend of modern and classic I wanted to revive my tray. You can see in this photo that the placemat was too big. Not a big deal to fix at all.
Supplies needed:
Tray
Placemat (preferably one that can easily wipe off spills)
Spray paint
Scissors and ruler
Poster Putty
With two light coats of black spray paint and trim off the placemat with a pair of scissors, I had a new tray that looks like this:
I gotta admit that I like this one better than tray #1, primarily because there were no mistakes with using too much Mod Podge. Ugh.
The dentil detail still looks good! Just a bit more polished now.
I decided to use some Poster Putty here to hold the placemat in place; just in case I wanted a new look down the road. I can easily switch out this placemat with something different and won’t have to ruin the tray at all.
And now… let’s bring in the Before and After action! C’mon, we all love them!
What do you think? Pretty fantastic, huh?
Total time: TEN minutes!!!!!! Not including dry time of the paint, of course. This hands-on time included two coats of paint, cutting the placemat to size, and affixing it to the tray with Poster Putty. Could not be ANY easier and faster!
Total cost: The tray was found at Goodwill for $3.99. The placemat was picked up at Superstore also for $3.99. I already had the paint and the Poster Putty, so that cost nothing extra. After taxes, this tray cost me a total of $8.84. Woohoo! I also have leftover placemat material. Wonder what I can make those into….?

This looks awesome! There’s
nothing I love more than a redesigned tray!
Thank you! ~M.
LOVE it!!!!!!
Thank you for your enthusiastic feedback! ~M.
Looks great! I need to get down to goodwill, keep seeing great diys with stuff from there
Thanks, Ginny! Goodwill is one of my favorite thrift stores in the States. Value Village and Salvation Army are also very popular. Did you see my wedding dress that I got from Goodwill? http://redesignedbym.wordpress.com/2012/11/16/project-wedding-the-dress/

what an improvement!
I use placemats to make wallets: http://grtescp.wordpress.com/2012/10/29/logical-progression-san-francisco-style/
What a fantastic idea! I’ll have to be on the lookout for more cool placemats so I can make some. Thanks! ~M.

Thank you so much! The placemat will be easy to clean off, which is why I like it too. Also, I just like the simplicity of the black and white check. ~M.
