It has taken me MONTHS of dawdling, but I have finally completed the reorganization of my linen closet! (And by “completed,” I mean, that it’s nice enough to present to you through my blog.)
As if I wasn’t already super proud of my pantry reorganization, I think I may be even more proud of my linen closet. Primarily, I’ve learned a few tips and tricks in photography since the pantry project so I feel like these photos of the linen closet are so much prettier. [insert humble giggle]
I think “before” photos are always fun. Let’s take a look at what I had to work with in the beginning:
And then how I used it soon after I moved in:
The walls were PINK! I gave the closet a quick facelift with a coat of paint on the walls and the shelves. Then I laid down shelf liner and started emptying our moving boxes. It kinda stayed like this for several months.
And then I attempted to restructure for better organization:
Since the shelves were two deep, I moved the front shelves around to add more storage. Got some plastic baskets from the dollar store and then things got chaotic because clearly, this was a bad design.

In an attempt to organize my most used tools, I hung them on several hooks (also from the dollar store) on the side walls.
Fun times, huh! Well, you can see all the areas that just needed improvement. Oh, can’t you? Let me break out the pointy stick and point them out to you, then!
So let’s see how I rectified my problem areas in the “after” photos…!
Heeeeey! Did you cheat and scroll down to this part without seeing the before photos? Ah well, I don’t blame you. *wink*
Do you recognize these shelves? They’re the same shelves with a faux barnboard finish. I blogged about it here.
It all started by clearing EVERYTHING out, including the shelves. The tools got a new home, so this closet has only one function now. And look what I found! I didn’t actually paint all the walls when I moved in. Haha! Of course, it’s fully painted now.
And now, some tips for you to take with you so you can launch into a reorganization of your own:
1. Dump, Donate, Keep. It turns out this linen closet is more of a “travel products storage closet,” but that’s a long title for a tiny room. I had to edit all my little bottles of hotel shampoos and body washes. Unlike a lot of households, we actually do use them in our house. They’re great for our weekend trips to Seattle. If it doesn’t fit in the overall function of the closet, get rid of it.
2. Apples with apples. Not only did I face all our large bulk bottles of toiletries like they do in stores, I also grouped them by type - also like the stores. You would never see the toothpaste mixed in with the facial cleanser in the Target aisles, so it makes sense to keep the same system in my house.
3. Containerize the little things. Sure, I could’ve just stacked the toilet paper rolls on the shelf without any problems, but I had some extra chicken wire laying around, so I just rigged up this little wire basket in the exact dimensions I needed to fit the shelf AND comfortably hold the TP rolls. I got the idea to make these baskets here.
4. Make pretty labels. Usually, I just print out utilitarian labels with my labelmaker, but as I wanted to make this closet a gem, I made colorful tags with handwritten labels. These also added the extra pop of color and continuity I was struggling to find.
5. Find storage in the overlooked places. If you study the “before” photo of this closet when I moved in, you’ll see that the shelves in here used to be two deep. Even if I only stored towels, the spacing between the shelves was too wide. When I moved the front shelf out and placed them in between the “back” shelves to close in the wide gaps, I was left with all this room on the side walls. Well, it’s not a TON, but 10″ can still store a lot of stuff - especially if the stuff you’re storing are little things. I hung these burlap baskets on the side walls for added functional storage. So, look up, look left and right, look behind you… can you see untapped storage potential?
6. Let there be light! The only way to light my closet is with the terribly dim hallway light (must do something about that, btw), but the light doesn’t get into the nooks and crannies. As I don’t have an electrical outlet in this closet and hardwiring is really not an option for a tiny CLOSET, I bought these battery-operated adhesive backed motion detector lights from The Home Depot. No wiring, no switching, easy installation! They don’t give off a ton of light, mind you, so if you have a large closet area, then you might want to find another option.
7. Add an unexpected punch of color. Do you ever have a favorite color you would love to use somewhere in the house, but it’s a bit too bright or feminine for the husband? Well, my solution is to paint the inside of your closets! In this case, I wanted to keep the closet itself quite serene and sophisticated, so I painted the inside of the door. When Mr. M saw me do this he said, “Whaaaaaaaat?? My wife is craaazy,” in a humorous, yet admirable way. I’m not sure about this purple color… I think I want to go more eggplant. Oh well! I’ll get to it another time.
8. Be flexible. The back of this wall is riddled with holes where I drilled for wall-mounted shelf brackets. Then I changed my mind about the shelf placement, so I removed the brackets and drilled again. Anyway, this went on far too many times, which was when I decided that it would be worth the investment to buy adjustable supports so I can move my shelves around easily. I also used these same adjustable supports in the Pantry Makeover. Even my pretty labels are easy to replace should I need to change the contents.
9. Make it a gem. Does it make sense to put in a plant and a framed photo in a storage closet? Of course not, but why does it always have to make sense? I wanted elements of surprise and eye candy every time we accessed this closet (and showed it off in house tours), so I went the extra mile to put in some special touches. Come to think of it… I do remember my old classmates in college called me “over achiever.”
Now it’s another room in my house that I adore.
And just so I don’t leave out credit where credit is due… here is the image that sparked the inspiration to this closet:

There are more inspiration photos on my Pinterest board here. Do you think I did a good job matching up to the inspiration photo?
Do you have any great closet reorganization projects to share? I’d love to see them!
Total time: This was quite the project! It took a total period of five days that spanned five months. One day was spent painting the walls and the shelves. Another day adjusting and readjusting the shelves. Another day to buy the containers and fill them. A fourth day to put grommets into the burlap baskets and hang them. And the last day to paint the door and photograph.
Total cost: The shelves and paint materials, picture frame, and wire baskets were free as I had them around the house. The shelf uprights and brackets were $61.49 from The Home Depot. All glass jars, woven baskets, and gray box were $67.12 from various sources. I used two battery-operated lights from The Home Depot for $42.40. The ironing board holder from Storables was $10.90. The artificial plants were $22.38 from HomeSense. Final tally = $204.07.
That makeover is amazing! I love the chicken wire baskets that you created!
Thank you! ~M.
You have a purple door! Unfortunately, my hubby would never agree to something like that :p
Only the inside of the door is painted! The outside that faces the hall is still white. ~M.
It is stunning. A shame you have to close the door.
I’d be interested in knowing if the chicken wire compromises your toilet paper (snagging/tearing). Also, it looks so lovely that I would fear others in the house would ruin your beautiful organizing (alas that is what would happen in our home).
The chicken wire is pretty snag free - we’ve been using it for months now and there’re no problems yet. As for keeping it this way, I’m hoping that everything is so clearly labeled that my husband will remember to put things back properly. We don’t have kids yet, so it’ll be several years before I have to deal with it getting all ruined (I hope!). Glad you liked the makeover! ~M.
the end result looks great!! & again, i love me some labels! ha!
Thank you! Labels are so necessary in a good reorganization! ~M.
Love the chicken wire baskets, brilliant.
Thank you! They weren’t too difficult to make - just make sure to wear gloves. haha
Wow. Inspired. (Can you do this to my laundry room?)
Haha! Sure! ~M.
This is amazing! I love that adding a color scheme makes all the difference. Ok, now come do mine. Pretty please.
Haha… you aren’t the first to ask! Thanks for the compliment! ~M.
I love the make over! What a great linen closet! Thanks for sharing at TTF.
Linda
Thank you!
There’s no way i could keep the redesigned closet clean! LOL Youre amazing!
Thank you! I may need to prevent anyone else from accessing the closet just to keep it organized. Haha ~M.
Awesome job I know how hard this is! I have yet to become organized thanks for all the amazing ideas!
Thanks! I could’ve worked so much faster, but I kept getting hindered by my own perfectionism. In the end, I just had to quit being so nitpicky and get it done!
Amazing!! I love organisation!! I’m in the process of doing my home office. I hope my makeover turns out as well as yours.
Thanks so much! I have to work on my studio/office as well and still conceptualizing it. Good luck on your project!
Fantastic Job! I love the finish on the shelves. I think that adds a lot to the overall feeling of peace you get when you look at. Truly inspiring.
Thank you! I agree that the faux-finished shelves adds the extra special character and personality to the overall serenity of the design. Had the shelves just been painted white, the closet would look a lot more stark… and boring!
This has inspired me to get to work on some messy areas in my home! I particularly love the plant
That’s awesome! I have it in mind to reorganize ALL my rooms in this fashion from now on.
It’s so pretty and functional! And thank you about the tip for the lights- I didn’t know those existed! Can’t wait to get some and try them out.
Thank you! Hope these lights work well for you. Remember, they don’t give off a ton of light, so if you want a lot, be prepared to put money down for a few.
What a transformation! I love the jars with the essentials…great ideas!!
Thank you so much! ~M.
Such a cute closet! I’ve been pretty happy with ours up until recently, you’ve given me so many ideas to spruce it back up! Funny, I was just thinking of doing dark wood stained shelving and then I found this!
It’s meant to be! I love how our closet turned out and hope I won’t need to change it again anytime soon. ~M.
This puts my closed to shame I am afraid to say. Perhaps it is time for a little overhaul myself!
Haha, this post was meant to inspire, not shame! I hope you’ve gotten some good ideas from this for your own closet. ~M.
Haha this is not a bad thing at all, a little shame will go a long way in motivating me
Wow, this is beautiful! It ;s getting me motivated to take on closets!
Thank you! I love organizing closets. It’s hidden away, so they’re often forgotten, but what a surprise to open the door and find some eye candy!
I had no idea a linen closet could be so pretty! Guess I better get to work on mine! Lol Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you! Let’s see yours when you’re done!
Love it! Especially the chicken wire baskets and hanging burlap baskets! I have a question though…where do you keep all of your towels?
Great question! The towels we use are kept in the bathroom, on hooks. The guest towels and extra bath towels are stored in the guest room. Kitchen tea towels and cleaning rags are stored in the pantry. ~M.
Thanks for the tips. They are really helpful. Now I have to find some time to reorganize my linen closet ;).
Thank you, Judith! Glad you found my tips helpful!
Looks lovely! I just adore the “eye candy”…what a great idea! I think it’s pretty to look at, but I think it would also keep me motivated to keep it looking neat and organized! Great job, I need to do my own!
I’m hoping all the prettiness will keep EVERYONE in the house motivated to make it stay this way. hehe
Oh wow! Talk about inspiration!! You did a great job on your linen closet! Seriously love the before & after! Thanks for linking up to Thrifty Thursday!

It was a lot of work, but huge payoff! Thanks for hosting!
Love it! That turned out beautiful!
Thank you so much!
The purple colour looks really beautiful, would be soothing to the eyes whenever you walk to the closet.
Thank you! I wanted to do something different from ordinary linen closets and I love purple. ~M.
So pretty! I like the glass jar & label ideas!
Thank you!
I have so much to organise after moving but storage baskets are just the way to go.
You did a great job! I need to organize my stuff too. Right now I have xerox boxes and a plastic container and I am sick of things falling over every time I reach for them. You have inspired me! Love the tags and jars so cute!
Thank you! It’s MUCH more functional now. Feels so good to know where everything is and not have to rummage through large containers! ~M.
I love it, and I love your desk!
Well, that’s not MY desk, but glad you liked the closet makeover!
This is great! I always plan to organize but I guess it will always be WIP
Thanks for stopping by my blog.
For me, it is too! Good luck with yours! ~M.
WOW! Love it! Such inspiration! We have very little storage, and only a small hall closet so it stays pretty organized (not much fits in it, lol). But, we do have a huge bedroom closet that has turned into the catch-all for everything, from vacuum, towels, sheets, toiletries, shampoo etc. I have been planning, and planning a makeover for it and after seeing this blog I am inspired to start creating my space. Thanks for sharing!
Sometimes larger spaces naturally become catch-alls as they’re so hard to organize! I hope the ideas I’ve shared here will be beneficial in your closet. Good luck and happy organizing! ~M.
Thank you very much for stopping by my blog and liking my post. This led me to your blog which is fantastic. A lot of great inspirational ideas. You are so organized and creative.Thank you for sharing your ideas and projects.
Aww, thanks so much! I hope I continue to inspire with more organization and creative projects. Stay tuned! ~M.
Amazing transformation! Great ideas!
Thank you!
Wow, great idea! You just gave me a whole new load of inspiration for my makeover plans! Love your blog!
Thank you so much! Will be making some changes around the blog here, so be sure to follow along with my updates. The linen closet is only 1/100th of the house… lots more projects in the works!
Looks great and what a fun color door!
Thank you!
no I didn’t cheat and scroll down , I was happily thinking the first photos were the finished ones ! lol,
wow amazing job , so glad I got to see this .
it will inspire me , for sure , as I have a very similar set up in a dark hallway . the battery light is a great idea.
thank you!
Thanks for reading all the way through and not cheating! Haha. Those lights are the most perfect solution, but if you don’t want to do add any electrical into a tiny closet or do any hardwiring, these battery operated guys will work in a pinch! ~M.
I LOVE your linen closet makeover - this is SO inspiring. My bathroom cabinets are a mess - I have SO many beauty products - so I’m going to use some of your tips to get a handle on those! Thanks for sharing!
My bathroom cabinets are a mess too! I have to tackle those one day, but there are other more pressing projects to manage at the moment. Hope these tips work out well for you! Thanks for the comment! ~M.
You are my hero!
Thank you!
