Tool Closet Makeover

Sharing another nugget from my house today! There was this coat closet in our house that was inconveniently located in the center of the house instead of off the front door, as any normal coat closet should be! What a hassle it was to walk past the living room and dining room before you could hang your coat. That was quickly resolved by putting up a coat rack next to the front door and then that closet turned into (you guessed it) a room where everything disappeared to and never was seen again. *cue creepy tune*

But what I absolutely needed was a central location to store all my tools. And boy do I have loads of tools! This is one girl who loves walking out of Home Depot with all sorts of goodies. When my collection of screwdrivers, drill bits, picture hangers, tape measurers, and drywall anchors outgrew the little toolbox I purchased way back in college, I decided to turn this Bermuda Triangle of a coat closet into a tool closet.

Can I get a hooray for an incredibly fantastic idea?

Then this sad state of affairs….

Turned into this…

I am not too shy to admit that I frankly get all gooey with immense pleasure and zen-like and stuff when I see a very organized space. Does anyone else feel me?

So you know from my past organizing projects that I don’t just take everything out, dust off the shelves, and put things back in again in right angles. Oh no, that ain’t my style! I’ve gotta give it a certain look, repaint all the walls, paint over the shelves, put things into pretty containers, etc. If you need further proof, here are a couple of past projects I’ve done that were completely made over head to toe:

All my closets have to be snazzy. If anything, I feel I can get really creative in these tiny rooms since they’re tucked away from the rest of the house behind doors. I like getting that jolt of pleasure at opening a door to find a jewel inside.

The concept for this tool closet was kind of old shopkeeper/small hardware store/little old man with spectacles hobbling around to find you the perfect tool to get the job done. I mean, if you must envision Ollivander’s Wand Shop, I’m not gonna stop you.

The walls were painted over in a deep blue bordering teal color. I built apothecary style drawers to hold all the small screws, nails, batteries, and bits. They were then finished to look aged and well-used. Shelves were strategically placed to hold my ever-growing hoard of latex and spray paints. Frequently used tools were hung on a peg board behind the door.
