The Redesigned Tweed Skirt Tutorial

I bought this tweed skirt so long ago that I can’t even remember when. To be honest, I’ve only worn this skirt less than a handful of times. Every time I wore this skirt, I felt frumpy knowing this A-line shape and high-low hemline were not doing my figure any favors. It should’ve gone to the donation bin ages ago, but the unique aqua color of this tweed skirt really held back my hand. I just love tweed! And this material makes for a fun fall skirt. So I kept it hanging in my closet collecting dust. It wasn’t until I learned the art of redesigning that I realized I could make over this skirt into something more flattering.

This is what it looked like before. I shudder at how terrible it looked on me. Read on for the tutorial to my redesigned tweed skirt.

Supply List

• Old unflattering skirt
• More flattering skirt
• Sewing machine
• Thread
• Pins
• Chalk
• Scissors

Step-by-Step

Step 1
Use a skirt that DOES look good on you as a template. (I used a pencil skirt.) Line the hem of the pencil skirt to the tweed skirt. I would’ve like to turn the tweed skirt into a pencil skirt, but it just wasn’t long enough.
Step 2
Trace the pencil skirt with chalk. Pin along the chalk lines with pins.
Step 3
Measure 3/4″ from the chalk line and cut. Sew along the chalk line. As the tweed skirt was lined, I sewed the lining separately as that’s how the original construction was.
Step 4
As I mentioned, the back of the skirt was longer than the front, but I wanted to make the hem all the same length. I cut the back to match the length of the front.
Step 5
It’s hard to see in this photo because the thread is black, but I sewed the back hem about 1/4″ from the cut edge to match the front hem.
Step 6
Rough up the back hem to gently fray to match the front.

Here’s my redesigned tweed skirt! Don’t you think the fit is much better than before?

It’s like having a brand new skirt to wear! What do you think of this redesigned tweed skirt? Do you have any similar items in your closet you’d like to redesign?

PROJECT SUMMARY:
X
Total Cost: Nothing!
X
Total Time: It took about two hours due to the need of sewing the lining separately from the tweed. Also, I’m not very proficient at sewing. (Experts, please do not laugh at my amateur tutorial.)
